My Musings days are well and truly over, but since this blog still gets more hits in a day than my others receive in a month, I thought I'd post this video here - a montage of photos of Mersea which appeared on Musings from a Muddy Island in years gone by. All part of my new business venture (a sideline, not a principal source of income, don't worry!), which you can, should you wish, find out more about here.
If you enjoyed that, there are more photos from the Muddy Island on the other videos in our youtube channel .

West Mersea Boxing Day Swim 2009

West Mersea's annual Boxing Day Swim. Last year, my son went in. This year, his elder sister joined him. The snow has gone from all but the darkest corners now, and the sun was shining, but there was a chill wind blowing.
Hundreds turned out to watch the the brave souls who were prepared to turn blue and goosebumpy to raise money for an organisation of central importance to the island - the RNLI. Crewed by highly trained volunteers, Mersea's lifeboat is busy all year round, providing offshore assistance to those in trouble on the water, from windsurfers and jet-skiers to sailing and motor vessels of every kind, as well as helping the other emergency services at high water when the Strood is impassable. Our own boat was joined today by the Clacton lifeboat and crew. Last year's swim raised over £5,000 in sponsorship, donations and takings from the sale of hot drinks and mince pies on the beach.

Not very musin'
Was wondering only last week when Older finally becomes synonymous with Wiser. I still don't know the answer to this but I do know, quite categorically, what the answer isn't.
And that is 49.
As I have already demonstrated this week, to my very considerable cost.

Prompted by a rather urgent need to muse upon this and others of life's mysteries, I headed waterwards, only to find - of course, this week's high tides again, silly (not wise) me - that my rickety old 'thinking jetty', aboard which I have privately mused, with many a hot chocolate for company, since arriving on the Muddy Isle, was completely submerged. Bother. So I went for a trudge on the beach instead but was too lost in thought to take any pics.

Mersea Boxing Day Swim 2008

The now traditional Mersea Boxing Day Swim in aid of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution took place on the beach at West Mersea at 11 am today.
My Boy took part, and his father gamely waded in ahead of the participants to take some action photos!

Most of these photos are by Mr Musings (that's him in the water in the black Colchester Rugby Club shirt!), but some of the land-based snaps are by me. (If anyone who took part would like to see all the pics we took, please drop me a line and and I'll send you a link to Mr Musings' website gallery.)
