Music for the Weekend - Richard Thompson

*Postscript: This is not the version I originally posted, which has now been removed from YouTube for 'violations' reasons. This one has a brief bit of interview before the song.

Excellent - a rare sighting of RT sans beret. There's a nice story about this song. Apparently, an American music publication did a profile of Richard, and used the details of this song as items in his biography - so, he ran away from home with a girl he met in a laundry, he had a drink problem, he split up with her after camping in the Gower, the girl married a man named Romany Brown etc etc. They couldn't apparently conceive of a songwriter who could adopt a persona in a song. Much as I love this, my all time favourite RT number is another persona song, "Al Bowllly's in Heaven."

Oh, I love this song! I've seen him three times in concert, and when he sings Bee's wing, it's just magical.

Thank you for posting this!

Hi everyone. No idea why I suddenly thought of it but I haven't been able to get it out of my head so . . . really pleased you all like it too!

Rob - that kind of assumption is made all the time about novelists and their work, however erroneously, but to take the lines of a song as biographical fact does seem extreme! I prefer the sans chapeau look myself. His website http://richardthompson-music.com/default.asp sports an extraordinary combination of nautical and apiarian imagery.

Teabird - wow, lucky you! (thinks: I really must get out more myself)

J & M - hope this was the right one of your two comments to publish!

OK, I want to claim the "I've seen RT the most" prize. I think- and really, I've lost count - it's about 12 times, but it's certainly into double figures.
The website is great for all things RT. He was an early adopter of the power of the interweb to promote his stuff, e.g. "official" bootlegs. Legend.

Rob - and now you're going to tell me you were in the audience here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fc2tr8QNNAU . . .

No, wasn't there, but enjyed the clip, though Pete Zorn sounds a bit off key. I vowed some years ago, following an experience involving a lot of moles, a communist era Polish holiday camp and some projectile vomit that I would never sleep under canvas again. Thus, no festivals for me. Also, I won't go to gigs where you have to stand. I want to see my heroes in civilised circs.

Rob - "a lot of moles, a communist era Polish holiday camp and some projectile vomit" - did make me laugh (and choke somewhat on my lunchtime sarnie!)

The world is not yet ready for the Polish communist holiday camp story, but one day all will be told...
