A length of thread

Sewing a great many name tapes into a very large pile of new school uniform earlier in the week put me in mind of one of my favourite paintings: A Length of Thread, by Eduoard Vuillard (sometimes known as Interior with Sewing Women).

(1893. Oil on canvas. 41 x 33 cm. Yale Center for British Art, New Haven)

'A Length of Thread' put me in mind of 'Chop Suey' by Edward Hopper - 1929. A Totally different type of painter I know, but he did spend some time in paris painting around the early 1900's and was influenced by the realist painters in France as opposed to the cubists of the time.

Hmmm, I've never been a big fan of Hopper, but yes, light and colour on the planes, surfaces and corners of interiors . . . I can see exactly why the one put you in mind of the other. I'd still rather have a Vuillard on my wall when I win the next rollover jackpot than a Hopper, though!
