Packing Shed

Blog briefly hijacked today - this is a one-off and it'll be 'oi, get your own blog' next time - by the other half of Doyle & Co, just so you can see what it was like this crisp, frosty morning over at the old Packing Shed, which stands on the aptly named Packing Shed Island, just off the coast of West Mersea.

A working party of Canute-inspired volunteers chunters over there in boats at regular intervals to shovel shingle from one place and deposit it in another. Whereupon the sea gradually washes it back and the whole process starts all over again.

The idea is to keep the old shed (the history, significance and restoration of which you can read about here and here) standing upright on its own little island rather than allowing it to fall into the sea, which is easier said than done, hence the working parties and various heroic fund-raising efforts which have resulted in the importation of barge-loads of granite (necessitating even more shovelling).

Ah yes, the Packing Shed. Our book circle is hoping to have an evening meeting there this summer, so keep piling on the ballast. ;-)Teresa
