TBTE

Or, strictly speaking, TMTE (the mud this evening).

SDs #1 and 2 on their way back from exploring the wrecked trawler . . .

. . . and desperately trying to retrieve one of SD#2's wellies.

I just stood around taking photos and uttering Predictable Mum remarks, like 'I knew this would happen', and 'I'm going to have to wash that coat, now, aren't I?' and 'no, I am not coming over to help' . . .

It looks like your mud is endemic. Mine is sporadic, and at last, at last, I am starting to walk the dog without wellies.

It improves children's muscles no end, I find, for them to heave out their own wellies. I think of it as resistance training; for them and for me.

Mud defines life here, Jane. Mersea mud is tenacious - it sticks to everything, it stains indelibly, it has a characterisic smell which I'm quite fond of after all these years, but it's not everyone's ideal fragrance. All island dogs smell of it permanently. What can't be captured in photos is its depth and astonishing powers of suction!

There is a little bridge over a little stream on our property from which my own kids like to stray. When Kid 1 was about 4, she stepped off this bridge and into mud that quickly enveloped her leg up the knee. The shoe was never found. We imagine some archaeologist may find it someday, perhaps in the form of a fossil. Perhaps that person will be able to tell about our whole life from that shoe...

Great series of photos - these and the books too. The wellies in mud scenes bring back happy memories of Norfolk holidays!

Thanks for all your comments - you'll all be amused to hear, no doubt, that I arrived home after this little jaunt to discover that the washing machine had broken (holding a full load of vital school uniform captive)! Thankfully, my friendly Washing Machine Repair Man has just fixed it (a Parker pen cartridge and a hairclip had jammed the pump . . . sigh), so now I can get those muddy things washed at long last!

hmmm having lived in Tollesbury across the river for 17 years those sentences sound very familar...come to that I am still saying them as my family explore The Wash in Norfolk instead!

Hi Sally - I've been admiring the lovely recent photos on your site. And you have a boat named Wild Goose! How wonderful!
