. . . where the clouds are made of candyfloss . . .

Ok chaps, please look away now.

This one is strictly for pony-loving girls of a Certain Vintage:

Ahhhh, summer holidays were made of this . . .

I really must stop this at once, or I'll soon find myself galloping along the beach, jumping nimbly over things and occasionally rearing up on my 'hind legs', pawing the air with my hooves and tossing my flowing mane. While neighing at passers-by, naturally.

This was my favoured means of perambulation at the age of 9, but since most other girls of my acquaintance were also trotting along, tapping themselves gently on the bottom with a stick and performing complicated sideways and backwards dressage movements on the way to school, it didn't seem particularly strange.

Clearly it was in fact deeply strange behaviour, and doesn't require too detailed an examination before we start to stray into uncomforable territory.

You will understand why I need to nip this thing in the bud right now!

Juliet what an absolute delight it has been catching up with your blog. I haven't the faintest why you think it was deeply strange behaviour. I regularly rounded up the 'neigh'bourhood (sorry for unintentional pun) small fry and made them trot, canter etc whilst I was the instructor. I loved Folly Foot Farm on tv as well. I've obviously missed some vital stage in the growing up process as I am still cavorting around on horses. And, you are certainly not going to get me to admit in public that I still play 'horses' even if it is a game on the computer - you just cannot get other adults to whinny or neigh or trot leading rein in succession to the rear of the ride. Mmmm....I have got two neices though...

T - ha ha, this did make me laugh - and also of course I found it most reassuring. (I've seen other small girls trotting and even neighing, of course, but it was the thwacking ourselves on the bottom with a stick bit which, looking back, I find a tad disconcerting!) And, erm, I think you'll find you HAVE just accidentally admitted to playing horses on the computer - ooops!

Well done for turning the fantasy into some proper real-life riding, though - that was something I was never either brave or allergy-free enough to do! Really pleased to hear you've been back in the saddle after your recent 'wobble' as well.

(NB Steve Hodson is 60 this year! - and I never DID marry him, which just goes to prove that this 'power of visualisation' stuff is a load of old nonsense!)
